Factors determine the pricing of ruby and sapphire

Since the color, clarity, and brilliance play a greater role in determining the price of ruby or sapphire than shape and cutting style. Nevertheless, these two factors can affect the value of these stones. The way they affect it is described below.

Since the cabochon is the simplest style, it costs less to cut than faceted styles. Another reason cabochons are generally priced less is that they are often made from lower quality material that is unsuitable for faceting. Cabochon rubies and sapphires can also be of high quality, especially those found in antique jewelry.

The shape of faceted rubies and sapphires of one carat or more usually has a greater effect on their price than the faceting style. Corundum dealers, however, do not always agree as to which shapes are the most valuable. This is illustrated by comparing shape/price correlations outlined in The Guide and the GAA Precious Gem Market Monitor, two publications that offer colored-stone pricing information based on dealer surveys.

According to the 1990-1991 Guide, the shape/price correlation for good to extra-fine rubies and blue sapphires are generally as follow:

Marquise or emerald cuts               5% to 20% more than cushions & ovals
Rounds                                 0% to 20% more
Pear shape                             0% to 15% more

(The better the stone, the higher the percentage of increase)

According to the current GAA Precious Gem Market Monitor the shape/price correlations for corundum are generally as follow:

Rubies
Rounds                                 10% to 20% more than cushions or
                                         ovals
Emerald cuts                            same or a bit more
Marquise & pear shapes                 5% to 20% less

Sapphires
Rounds & emerald cuts                  10% more than cushions & ovals
Marquise & pear shapes                 same as cushions & ovals

Perhaps you are wondering why the results of these two surveys are so different. One reason is that each publication got its information from a different group of dealers. Another reason is that many dealers don’t have a lot of large pear, marquise, and emerald-cut stones from which to make shape/price comparisons. The majority of their rubies and sapphires of a carat or more are cushions and ovals. Both the guide and the GAA Gem Market Monitor acknowledge that sharp variations of pricing may exist from one dealer to another. Colored stone pricing is not standardized as diamond pricing. Frequent shop around jewelry stores and if you may be have more knowledge of price in different size and shape of stones.
