Curios history about ruby and sapphire

We are not only royal gems, we are sacred as well. In the Catholic Church, sapphires have been used in the rings of bishops and cardinals. Our blue color symbolizes heaven, and supposedly, people who wear us become more virtuous, devout, and wise.

Buddhists believed sapphires signified friendship and steadfastness. Ancient Hindu thought if they offered a ruby to the God Krishna, they would be reborn as an emperor. According to Hindu writings, the ruby represents the sun, and the sapphire, the planet.

Perhaps you’re wondering why we have been so revered throughout history, its party because of our rich looking colors. Thanks to them, we can look like jewels even when we are cut into simple rounded stones with no geometric facets. A diamond cut this plain would look rather drab.

Many people don’t realized that we are each a blend of two colors. For example, in one direction a ruby looks purplish and in another, orangy. But when you view it as a whole, you see a sumptuous red.

To top it all off, the ruby is blessed with a red aura. It’s usually in the sun that you see this distinctive glow. But the ancient Burmese said it could even be seen in the dark. According to one legend, a king in Burma had rubies that glowed so brightly, they lit up the city.

Rubies have used their color to full advantage. They grab your attention with it, and then cleverly manipulate you into thinking they are bigger and closer than they actually are. This helps rubies compensate for the fact that their average size is generally less than other gemstones. Their small size is not necessary a detriment. They use it to prove they are very rare. Consequently, rubies can bring usually high prices. Our friends the diamonds brag about their rarity. Our family, though, is far rarer. That’s another reason we are so revered.

Diamonds do have something over us. They are several times harder. But no other gemstones are harder than we are. Actually our family is glad we’re number two in terms of hardness. This means that diamonds get stuck with the majority of the cutting, grinding, and polishing work. Some of it, though, is still reserved for us. Plus our man-made brothers and sisters serve as styluses in record players, tips in ballpoint pens, and jewel bearings in watches, meters, and aircraft instruments. Since 1960, we’ve been used as a core in lasers.
