The Myths Behind Amber Jewelry

Dinosaurs have been better known than ever since their starring role in the film Jurassic Park. The result of the film's popularity has been a worldwide surge in demand for amber jewelry. Although amber has had only a limited market at the recent time. We can not deny that the immediate cause is when people saw dinosaur DNA extracted from a mosquito trapped in amber. The amber mines are mainly covered in Baltic region, Burma, Mexico, Romania, Germany, and Canada. But the largest mine is in Baltic region, particularly the Baltic region of Russia.

Some people said that the amber is a time like a capsule made and placed in the earth by nature herself. There are two main sources of amber on the market today but the demand is still strong especially the amber with insects inside it.
The amber with insects inside can be identified into more than a thousand species. The older former amber is preferred to be more valuable and the price range from $50 up to even more than four thousand.

Amber took on great value and significance in jewelry markets and never completely went out of vogue since the Stone Age. Between the year 1895 and 1900, a million kilograms of Baltic amber were produced for jewelry. For nowadays, amber is still a kind of popular gemstone materials for fine jewelry or even costume gemstone jewelry which is easily find in most of the wholesale gemstone jewelry, or there is lots of amber jewelry wholesale.

There are many myths surrounding the origin of amber. The Greeks called amber 'elektron', which means sun-made, perhaps because of this story, or perhaps because it becomes electrically charged when rubbed with a cloth and can attract small particles. Homer mentions amber jewelry - chandelier earrings and a necklace of amber beads - as a princely gift in the Odyssey. In the ancient history, the Emperor Nero of Rome was a great connoisseur of amber, he sent the armies to conquer and control amber producing area. Clear colorless amber was considered the best material for rosary beads in the Middle Ages on account of its smooth silky feel.

Most amber just isn't old enough, having had some 25 to 50 million birthdays at the most. However the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period. The Jurassic period was 144 million years ago. But in 1994, Dr Raul Cano of California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, a molecular biologist, reported in the British journal 'Nature' that he and his colleagues had extracted DNA from a weevil that was trapped in amber 120 to 135 million years ago, when dinosaurs did indeed roam the earth.
