Talk About 60s Retro Costume Jewelry

Like everything else of the 1960's, there were two major trends in jewelry: The first focus is on mod fashion and it really focuses around geometric shapes. Now the fashion of the mod was a take off of business fashion and it had really simple lines. The clothing itself was also very simple. But the pieces that were worn as jewelry for mod were meant to make a statement. These earrings are a really good example. They are a geometric shape (a large circle). They are white (white and black were the main mod color pallets) and they would pick up on the white eye shadow that you would wear with your makeup as a mod. Also they are huge, so these are really great retro earrings.

The second trend was the hippie trend, which once again was a antidote to what mod might wear. Hippie culture was a reaction in some respects to the mod style and the button up looks of the 1950's. So, whereas in mod we had it shorter skirts, clean lines and a definite sort of feminine look, in hippie culture we come to long skirts, And let's talk about why these things are important individually. The long skirt is not the kind of long skirt that you saw in the 1950's because it just goes straight down. This dress is also made out of cotton which is a natural fabric which would have been really important. And the shoes, they’re flat, they're made of natural material, and there's no heel. That's very important because the basics of hippie fashion were not so much about adornment and being attractive as much as returning to your roots, and returning to the earth and being natural. The floral pattern of this is an indication of that. It's also a reference to the psychedelic drugs which were taken by a lot of hippies. And there's a floral pattern on the dress also. And this is interesting. That would be natural materials and natural processes to make the jewelry. These are both natural-they come from the earth. The thread that holds it together is a natural cotton cord. It is from Costa Rica. A desire for authenticity was really at the root of a lot of hippie a fashion- a return to nature and a return to authentic peoples. I'd like to show you some earrings that indicate the same thing. These earrings are another really great example. The beading is done by hand. They are in a natural color. You can see the beading right here. These were made by hand and that was considered more authentic than the jewelry of the 1950's, which involved a lot of stones.

I have one more pair of earrings to show you. These pick up on the desire for authenticity that went along with looking at indigenous cultures. These are Native American based earrings, based on designs by Native Americans from the southwest of the United States. The stones are once again natural stones and the earrings are hand made. All of which seemed more real for people searching for authenticity, which is what the hippie movement was about.
